June Landscape Tips

6/1/2015

Picture
If the heat has not yet slowed down your joy of gardening, I must tell you to stop planting. Shrubs and trees planted now will require an excessive amount of water to get established over the next few months, so it’s better to wait until the cooler weather of fall sets in. June is a great month to fertilize your planter beds again with a balanced 15-15-15 fertilizer, however, if you have California natives or low water use Mediterranean plants, skip fertilizing them.  This is traditionally their dormant period, and they don’t need the extra nutrients.  Keeping them watered once or twice per week may keep them from going completely dormant, but be easy, they don’t like “wet feet,” and you planted them to save water anyhow.  June is a great month to sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labor. Have a glass of lemonade.  What’s that? You have ants bothering you now? This is typical as they search for water and food. The use of bait stations is far more effective than sprays. The baits are carried back to the nest where it kills the queen and her offspring, effectively ending the life cycle of the colony.  Now that we are deep into summer, we need to be irrigating our turf 7 -9 start times a week; now through September.  We are still running it 7 minutes per run time, 4-5 days per week. But with the temperatures soaring, we may have to run it twice on some of the watering days. This is called cycle and soak. We water for 7 minutes, wait an hour and run an additional 7.

Water Restrictions

6/1/2015

EVMWD has imposed the following restrictions effective immediately which will affect the common area landscape within the community:

EVMWD Board Approves Stage 4a Mandatory Water Restrictions
Governor Brown’s Executive Order prompts more stringent water use guidelines

In response to Governor Brown’s executive order for mandatory water reductions, the Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District Board of Directors unanimously approved and implemented the EVMWD Water Shortage Contingency Plan Stage 4a and is authorizing mandatory reductions to outdoor water use.

Customers will be asked to reduce outdoor irrigation to two days a week under the new guidelines.
Customers with addresses ending in odd numbers ((ending in 1,3,5,7,9) may water their landscape on Mondays and Thursdays.
Customers with addresses ending in even numbers(0,2,4,6,8)   may water their landscape on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Other guidelines now required of EVMWD customers are as follows:

Water Use Prohibitions:
•           Washing down sidewalks or driveways
•           Watering during or within 48 hours after a rain event.
•           Overwatering, causing water to run off of a landscaped area
•           Washing your vehicle on your property.
•           Filling, refilling or adding water to your pool.
•           Using a fountain or water feature unless the water is recirculated.
•           Watering on windy days.
•           Providing water at restaurants or food establishments unless requested.

Guidelines for outdoor water use and irrigation for residential and commercial:
•           Use sprinkler irrigation systems between the hours of 6:00 P.M. and before 6:00 A.M.
•           Limit sprinkler operation to no more than two times per week on odd/even calendar days based on last digit of service address.
•           Watering by hand, with drip irrigation or reclaimed water is ok during daylight hours.
•           Sprinklers and irrigation systems should be adjusted to avoid overspray, runoff and waste.
•           Fix leaks or broken irrigation equipment to reduce waste.
•           Having a cover on your pool to reduce evaporation.

EVMWD will continue to provide customers with as many tools as possible to help its customers stay within their water budgets. If water budgets are exceeded, customers will be penalized for excessive use under the restrictions. Customers are encouraged to take advantage of the many water saving rebates and free programs EVMWD offers. Programs including turf replacement and water evaluations are available at www.evmwd.com/conservation.

Fines
Customers who do not comply with the stated restrictions and guidelines will be subject to the following fines, as stated in EVMWD’s Water Shortage Contingency Plan for Stage 4a violations.
